The Worlds Worst Soda

10/06/08, by Kate Hopkins Email 1651 views • Categories: Soda

I'm home ill today. I'm not sure why I'm telling you all that, as it has very little to do with food. But, eh, people have been telling me to be a little more personable on the blog. Consider this you getting to know me better. :-P

Tara and I spent the part of the day on Saturday shopping at Uwajimaya, possibly my second favorite place to shop in all of Seattle. The best part about this place is that it is the place to find imported foods and products from East Asia. If you want Pocky or any other of Mass Produced Japanese products, this place is Nirvana.

Which is how I came across this soda. It's an imported Japanese soda, and it's perfectly, beautifully, horrible. Here's what I think would be the recipe if one wanted to make this drink at home.

Take 300 ml of carbonated water. Place in eight packs of Bubble Yum. Allow to set overnight to extract the bubble gum flavor.

The next morning, remove the gum, add twenty-seven servings of cotton candy. Allow to melt. Add one drop of blue food coloring. Serve.

It is so sweet. SO sweet. I have no idea on the taste for sweets held by Japanese children, but I've never tasted a drink like this. For all of my kvetching about American Soda, there's little in comparison to this.

everyone in atlanta that has visited the coke museum loves to commiserate over how bad the soda "Beverly" is. It's so bad it has become a must-try item.

I've been to the Coke museum in Las Vegas when it was there. I remember the worst soft drink ever. It's worth commiserating about. Disgusting, but in a different way.

Yep. The Japanese sodas are horrific. When I took a few friends of mine to the ramen-ya inside Mitsuwa marketplace here where I am, they decided to get snacks and drinks when we left. A few of them got some carbonated drinks and I was disgusted by the level of sweetness in them. Vomitastic.

I love the disgustingly kitchy packaging. Would never dream out drinking it however.

Uwajimaya is tied for first for my favorite place to shop in Seattle. Though I can't always find my coconut Pocky which always makes me a little sad.

Thanks goodness I've never had one! But we just discovered Jones sodas. Pure cane sugar, no HFCS.

Yum!!!!! We love it.

While in EPCOT for a band trip a group of my friends and I found a Sodas of the World stand with free samples. The Italian Watermelon soda was delicious, but the Japanese soda, and I don't remember the actual flavor, was horrendous! My first friend to try it spit it out, and one by one the rest of us choked it down.

Then we started daring each other to drink it and making bets on who could drink the most. It was awful- painful, even, to hold in your mouth. It was like drinking glass.

And Jennifer's right, Jones makes the best soda I've ever had.
