New Poll: What is your favroite Type of Whisk(e)y?

08/01/08, by Kate Hopkins Email 1557 views • Categories: Whiskey/Whisky, Polls

I have no idea why I didn't think to ask this sooner. So let me put it out there for you right now...what is your favorite type of whisk(e)y?

For you hardcore whiskey enthusiasts out there, I've added a few additional categories from the basic set of Scotch, Irish, Canadian, and Bourbon. I'll admit that I could have delineated further by adding specific regions on there, such as Speyside, the Lowlands, or Islay. But instead, I'll let you do that for me in the comments.

For me, right now, I have to say that I am a big fan of Irish Whiskey. That's not to say that I've tried all of the Scotchs, nor that I love all of the Irish Brands. In fact, I'm kinda/sorta indifferent to the top selling Irish Whiskey brand Jamesons. But I love me some Tyrconnell, and my heart simply adores Bushmill's single malts. Out of all the research I've done, the biggest surprise was how much affinity I've picked up for these brands (can one pick up an affinity?).

Okay...so let the chest thumping begin!

Glenmorangie, or Black Bush. I kep trying to like Islay whiskies, but I just can't do it: there's something intriguingly extreme about Lagavulin, but I don't want to finish a whole glass.

I tend to enjoy a good Bourbon over the rest, although I do often times like Irish and Canadian whiskies as well. Some of my favorites are Woodford Reserve (a brilliant Bourbon), Wild Turkey, and Maker's Mark... but I'll often venture into the other types of whisky too and end up with Cutty Sark, Jamesons, or even the ever-popular Crown Royal

I'm a rye man, myself, but do like Makers Mark a lot, too.

Wild Turkey. Some people hate it because it's like rocket fuel. I love it because it's like rocket fuel.

You can't beat Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve. Just the name alone is worth it.

Some time ago, when it was still available, I used to enjoy Bellow's Partners Choice, an American Rye whisky.

I'm a huge fan of Glenfarclas (especially the 17- and 21-year-olds) for a really smooth dram. It's on the pricy side for a regular drink, so I stick to Balvenie Double Wood as my standard. I also love the peaty Islay scotches.

My preference in blends is solidly in the Johnny Walker Black camp. I like Pappy and Maker's bourbons.

After reading about your adventures, I'm definitely going to explore Irish whiskeys.

I am a big fan of the Great Bourbons with Old Forester being my favorite. Its character is exceptional even compared to premium Bourbons. It is the best value in whisky... period!

I love bourbon. The bottle I've been working through lately is Baker's, and it is really quite fantastic. Smooth and sweet, it's perfect straight up or on the rocks. (Rye is a close second -- really great in a Manhattan or Sazerac -- current bottle is Old Overholt)

My Number one right now is Red Breast Irish whiskey. I was a bourbon gal until a wise old whiskey savant put a taster of Red Breast in my hand in his shop.

I love the value of a bourbon like Buffalo Trace. We did a blind tasting and it beat our 20 Year old Pappy Van Winkle.

Bellows Partners Choice. (Not Bellow's, as in my earlier post.) This was once a popular blended rye whisky.

Check out this ad from 1954. http://cgi.ebay.com/1954-Bellows-Partners-Choice-Vintage-Whiskey-Ad_W0QQitemZ380045664207QQcmdZViewItem?IMSfp=TL0807121542r11608#ebayphotohosting

This is an ad on eBay that I have nothing to do with. It may disappear when sold.

Highland Park, 18 years old. Brewed in Orkney, a set of islands in northern Scotland and just bloody wonderful. I believe that they are the only distillery in the U.K. that still hand turns malt or at the very least one of few.

Glenmorangie and Oban are my favorite single malts. No ice, just straight. I tried a few more this past week at a great place in Denver called Pints. Over 300 single malts in one beautiful place! And the food was pretty good too.

As a hands down favorite, I'd have to say Wild Turkey, for a "Fancy Pants" Bourbon, Basil & Hayden is unmatched for me.

Irish Whiskey? Powers Irish Whiskey is absolutely without peer in my humble opinion. You really must try this stuff. Unfathomable how the wee little fairies could cram such a remarkable libation into a bottle.

I like any good quality whiskey. Single malts are probably my favorite, McCallan Fine Oak varieties being one of my current faves. Among other brands that I've enjoyed that didn't break the bank: Red Breast, Dalwhinny 15 (a little pricey), McCallan Fine Oak 10, Maker's.

Bellow's Partner's Choice was one of my favorites. I assume it is no longer available?
I could find it in one liquor in Costa Mesa, CA is the '70's. It was somewhat sweet as I recall.

Does any body have an empty whiskey bottle for
"Bellow's Partners Choice"
My husband has named his restored 55 Chris Craft that name in honor of his Dad's favorite whiskey.
I know he'd like to have a bottle like that on the seat when he's showing the boat.
Thanks

I love Irish Whiskeys first and foremost, followed quickly by Islay Scotches... I must say that "top 5" whisk(e)y list goes:
Midleton Rare
Bunnahabhain
Jameson Gold Reserve
Knappogue Castle
Oban
