BBQ Chip Chopped Ham Sandwich - Pittsburgh Recipes

01/24/06, by Kate Hopkins Email 8686 views • Categories: Sandwiches, Lunch

It's only 12 days until kickoff, and already I've annoyed Tara with my talk of food and football. She's countering every point I make, and making sure to keep me honest when discussing this touchy subject.

You see, when it comes to feeding and eating on Football days, I am a traditionalist (some would say classist). Come kickoff time, I don't want to hear about Portugese-Style Salt Cod Fritters or Barcelona Style rice. I want the day to be about who and what's on the field, and not about who cooked the food. So the food should be good, simple and accessible.

Since Pittsbugh is in the Super Bowl, I've got several recipes lined up that will win people over and provide a Pittsurgh Style celebration.

This recipe is unsophisticated, but tried and true. This is the point. I've updated it a bit after playing around with the recipe.

  • 2 lbs Chip Chopped Ham (shaved ham if this cut is unavailable in your area)
  • 3 cups of your favorite BBQ Sauce
  • 1 1/2 onion, diced
  • 2 green peppers, diced
  • 8 Kaiser rolls
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese

Place all except the rolls and cheddar cheese into a slow cooker. Heat for four hours.

Scoop onto rolls and top with cheese before placing the top of bun on the sandwich.

Serves 8

mmmm...this sure does take me back...though I think my mom used less BBQ sauce and more tomato sauce. ..maybe it's the New Ken Sicillian family influence?

I noticed your recipe doesn't instruct us to "plate" the sandwich. I suppose the dish isn't highfalutin enough to use justify the use of insider foodie jargon in the recipe? ;-)

Enjoyed your recipe as we watched the game in Minn. Couldn't find a decent Seattle recipe so we decided to root for Pittsburgh.

This recipe is too high falutin over all...

just take the chiptam and add it to the pot with 1 cup Heinz ketchup, 1 can regular Coke and a 1/3 cup Heinz sweet pickle relish. Stir and simmer for about 30 minutes or until hot and thick. Throw the keiser rolls out and serve it on regular ol' Gynt Igle hamburger buns with your Mum's potato salad and a Heinz dill pickle on the side. Add a cold Iron City and yunz are all set.

I think My sister-in-law, Patty, from Monroeville, makes the BBqs as such.
Islay's chipped ham
bottle of Heinz chile sauce
coke
dill relish
simmer in crock pot for 1 hour at least.
slap the meat on a bun, add Gynt Igle coleslaw on top then add the top of the bun.....enjoy.
Hi Patty!
Go Pens!!!!
