A Full Scottish Breakfast

02/28/08, by Kate Hopkins Email 6622 views • Categories: Breakfasts

Lordy, lordy, lordy, do I love breakfast here on the Isles. Pictured above is a full Scottish Breakfast consisting of (starting at the noon position and going clockwise):

  • A fried egg
  • Sauteed Mushrooms
  • Black Pudding the size of a hockey puck
  • Lorne Sausage, a sausage prepared in a loaf pan. This one is a beef sausage.
  • 1 Slice of Bacon (aka "Rasher").
  • Fried Tomato
  • Potato Scone, which is quite unlike what I was expecting a scone to look like (having been to a few too many coffee shops in the States).

Not seen, the bemused hostess of the house we were at when I asked if I could take a picture of her food.

We could use a few more breakfasts like this back home.

Potato scones aren't particularly representative of scones in general- most scones in the UK will be similar to US coffee-shop ones (like an American 'biscuit').

Drop scones and girdle scones are yet more variations...

Lorne Sausage. It's been too long. I hope you blobbed ketchup on it.

That all looks excellently fried / grilled, with no background pool of oil. The hostess knows how to do a good, healthy fry-up.

Now THAT is lovely! Black pudding is soooo delightful! But where are the "tinned" beans...or is that strictly an English thing? :)

tinned beans are optional in Scotland it seems, but a requirement in Ireland, and likely England.

They certainly do set you up for the day, don't they? Look at all those beautiful sausages; thanks for sharing your breakfast...

I don't think you can beat a Scottish breakfast. An Irish one comes close, mind you.

Oh, I love British breakfasts! I don't bother with the toast, scones, or starchy things, but I love the eggs, back bacon, various sausages (especially black pudding), and grilled tomatoes. That sort of breakfast really sticks to the ribs and sets one up for a good long time until lunch. Toast and cereals just can't compare (I'm hungry an hour or two later).

Thank you all for your kind comments. I am the Breakfast Chef and only use locally sourced products and free range eggs. We are lucky here in the Highlands to have such excellent food on our doorstep. It was a pleasure having Kirsty and Kate to stay with us - the perfect guests and I hope they do not mind me saying so. They were very appreciative about our food and, of course, our range of whisky.
