Stats of the Day (or How the USDA fails again)

08/20/07 @ 07:55:41 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 1044 views • Categories: USDA, Organics

From the New York Times...

Despite year after year of double-digit growth, organics receive a pittance in financing and staff attention at the (USDA), which is responsible for writing regulations about organics and making sure that they are upheld.

The National Organic Program, which regulates the industry, has just nine staff members and an annual budget of $1.5 million.

And as we have seen with the FDA, when you underfund regulatory participation, you end up with companies gaming the system.

Not that we'd ever see that in the organic industry....right? Right?
