Starbucks and McDonald's according to the New York Times

01/10/07 @ 08:40:26 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 1818 views • Categories: Fast Food

Let me summarize the two key points in the New York Times piece entitled The Breakfast Wars:

  • Starbucks is hoping that their breakfast sandwiches aren't as crappy as their pastries.
  • McDonald's hoping that their new coffee isn't as crappy as their old brew.

For the record, Starbuck's new sandwiches are horrible. As noted in the article, when they cool down, they become nearly inedible.

As for McDonald's - I haven't eaten there in a long while, but I do note that here in the Pac NW, they are using Seattle's Best, which is only marginally better than their old drip coffee. Seattle's Best is also owned by Starbucks, which I find ironic, considering the points made in the New York Times piece.

Side Note: I'm of the belief that if the word "Best" is anywhere in the company name or a product that a company sells, they should have to prove it.

And yes, it seems as if I'm in a bit of a mood today.

I've always liked McDonalds Egg McMuffins (I have the hold the meat). Their eggs are very fresh (because they use so many of them) and served piping hot (well, when you special order without meat, they're really fresh).

The coffee is okay and when you go in the morning you know they're brewing constantly so you won't get a boiled cup.

I find myself going to McDonalds more often than Starbucks in the past year. Not that either is a lot ... maybe twice a month. I think I have the same affinity for McD coffee as I do for Starbucks anyway (I don't know what McD brews in SoCal).

I remember hearing somewhere -- which means this might very well be an urban legend -- that companies can claim to be the "best," but not "better."

That's because technically, legally speaking, all companies in a category can tie as the best one, but better implies specific comparisons. Every pizza joint in town can claim to have the best, but Pagliacci's can't claim to be better than Domino's.

It isn't the brand of coffee that's brewed in fast food places, but the strength of the brew. They just don't use enough coffee for it to be full flavored. Weak any brand is terrible.

Wait. Hold the phone. Starbucks OWNS Seattle's Best? When did this happen? We do live in a monopoly dominated world!

Eh, Starbuck's sandwiches aren't that bad, but can't we get some heartier muffins or something? Nuts and cheese? Yogurt? I don't like that the only choices are greasy and sweet.

And I wish Starbuck's would feature more good teas. Tazo is okay, but how about some loose leaf?
