Quick Straw Poll: Cake or Pie?

01/05/07, by Kate Hopkins Email 4015 views • Categories: Food, Desserts

And now - a bit o' silliness.

After listening to a non-food podcast where the topic of "Cake vs. Pie" came up, I was surprised to learn that there are people who actually prefer cake to pie. I thought these beings were simple urban legends long ago proven to be non-extistent. I lumped them in the same category as polite French waiters, Black Republicans or fans of Bobby Flay. I supposed that it was possible that they could exist, but I had never encountered one in my lifetime.

So how many people out there actually prefer a good cake to good pie? Am I been that removed from the mainstream?

Oh, and don't even get me started on Boston Cream Pie.

Honestly, I do prefer cake to pie. I'm not a big fan of fruit pies (although I love baking them) which seem to constitute most pies I run into.

So yes, they do exist!

I am also a cake lover, which apparently is a big pity since my mother is an excellent pie maker.

My stepfather decided to marry her when he came over for dinner when they were dating and said, "It could only get better if you had a raspberry pie to finish it off" and she pulled out one she had made one the day before!

The whole buttery-crust thing and fruit pie is lost on me (sacrilege, I know).

They exist! x2.

I am SHOCKED at you cake fans out there. How can you not like pie more than cake?

Ian - I can top that. I can have pie for breakfast (in the form of quiche). I can have it for dinner (Steak and Guiness pie). And of course I can have it for dessert.

And Brandi? I'm putting you down in the "Pie" camp ;-)

It depends on which type of cake vs which type of pie. I would take pumpkin pie over pumpkin cake. I would take chocolate cake over chocolate pie. I would take most any type of cake over mince pie. I would take most any type of pie over birthday cake with trans fat icing.

Kate - I call shenanigans! You have to leave the savories out of this categorical comparison. Pasties, quiche, pizza, pot-pies--none of them count when, by definition, cake is sweet.

And it's strange for me to even be arguing this point, as I am a dessert atheist.

An entertaining discussion nonetheless.

Since a girl I once worked with in London who didn't care much for me, nastily nicknamed me "Cakey Sam" you might gather that I am more of a cake girl than a pie girl.

I think I have suffered one too many soggy pie crusts in my life time to reverse the trend.

Yes, please. Thank you. Oh, you mean I have to choose one? Bummer.

As other's have commented, it depends on both the kind of cake or pie and my mood at the time. I am a confirmed chocoholic, but I don't care for chocolate pie. Give me a decadent triple-chocolate cake any day. I love fresh peaches (I even make sandwiches out of especially sweet ones on buttered, fresh honey-wheat bread) but I don't like them in a pie or cobbler. But raspberry pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie... yummmmmmm...

Btw, when we were first married, my husband asked for a birthday pie; he didn't care for cake at the time. I don't recall at this time (33 years later) what kind of pie he wanted, but I made it for him and put candles on it.

Cake, hands down.

I think it depends on if you like sticky sugars or not; I do not. In fact, I don't actually like *frosting* although I do love to decorate cakes.

I like savory pies much better than dessert pies, come to think of it. So maybe it is the sticky sugars thing, at least for me.

I'm definitely a pie man myself. And a fan of Bobby Flay. Yeah, I didn't know we were an endangered species. Yeah, give me a pecan pie any day over a cake (unless you DO want to give me amazing cake, then I might sing a different tune). Besides, aren't we all just cake or pie people waiting to be converted to the side of "I love any amazing example of either?" Give me an amazing slice of cake and an amazing piece of pie, and I'll be in heaven... twice.

Pie. Pie, pie, pie.

I don't really like cake much at all.

Exceptions: I like good chocolate cake with whipped cream and raspberries. I like hazelnut cake. I like carrot cake. But that's about it.

I don't like pies with canned filling. I don't much like custard pies (except for pumpkin), though I generally like custard.

But a really good pie will trump a really good cake nine times out of ten.

I think it's a texture thing for me. Most pies have some sort of goopy element, and the soft, tender fruit or creamy custard are not really different enough from a tender, flakey crust to make the contrast meaningful to me. Cake, while relatively straightforward, offers that satisfying crumb, something that your teeth just sink into. I always feel unsatisfied after a piece of pie. Cake does it for me.

Of course, I must really be an ice cream fan, because both cake and pie benefit tremendously from a scoop.

As I write the above I realize that both can be horrible, ruined things, and often are, particularly in diners.

Depends on the type of pie or cake. Carrot cake, gooey chocolate cake that I have to use my tongue to suck the icing from the top of my mouth..mmmmm, German chocolate, lemon with lemon icing, drool!

Pies depend on the crust (assuming the filling is good). If it's flaky of course, and I also love turnover crust, especially with the big crunchy sugar. I believe DH would choose pie over cake though, because every time he picks fruit, he asks for pie. Pecan pie is OK, I guess I'm burnt out from having a pecan tree, but we'll still eat it when there's nothing else handy LOL

Cheesecake cakes are devine! Oh, how I'd gobble up a carrot/cheesecake combination right now.

Never did get into the Bostom Creme pie though; it's one of those deserts I'd eat if there weren't any other options.

PS: Despite being a sugar junkie, I've turned down white cake because it's SO boring. Exception is when there's fresh fruit to eat it with (to cover up the blandness?)

I love cake, but I prefer pie. Especially sour cherry pie. In fact, I always asked my Grandma to make me cherry pie for my birthday. Yep. With a candle on it, too.

My husband and sixteen year old daughter are the same way. Cake is okay, but give them pie any day.

For she and I, at least, cheesecake, which is somewhere between pie and cake, in that it has a crumb crust like a pie, but is baked more like a cake, and has fruit like a pie, but sometimes has sour cream topping rather akin to icing, is a good compromise between cake and pie.

My husband, on the other hand, will take a bite of cheesecake and that is enough for him. He will then look at me and say, "Why didn't you make pie?"

Definitly a cake guy.

I like most pies just fine, but fewer and fewer bakeries in my area make pies with butter crust. Every pie that I haven't personally baked has been made with crisco, and it just doesn't do it for me.

I I love nothing better then a dense chocolate loaf cake, sliced thick and smothered with cream cheese. Yum!

Overall, cake.

Pie is more likely to be poorly made, while pretty much any cake is scrumptious. I think it's because I prefer desserts that are creamy (ie frosting) and not too sweet. I do like creamy pies, like banana cream or chocolate. And I prefer my fruit fresh, not cooked. But cake, oh, I love pretty much all cake. Especially birthday cake! Oh, and cake and pie are better with ice cream. Ice cream is really my favorite.

I had NO idea there were people who preferred pie to cake. If I have to choose, definitely, without question, cake wins.

However, to me, there are pie occasions and cake occasions. Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and occasions requiring more "elegant" desserts are reserved for cake or a simple fruit dessert (something like baked, poached, or glazed pears, etc).

Pies (with the exception of pecan and pumpkin, which are mandatory for Thanksgiving) seem more like something you would eat on a random day, usually in the summer or fall (when there's an abundance of fruit for filling).

Ring in another vote for cake. Sorry. That's because cake has....frosting. Mmmmmm. I also just often don't like the consistency of pie -- too mushy. When I want a pudding/custard or a fruit dessert, I want them as is, and not with some bits of crust in the way, especially as crusts can go soggy or bitter/sour too easily. Now, I love blueberry pie (fruit part only) over good vanilla ice cream, but that kind of means what I really like is a good fruit sauce over good ice cream. I love coconut custard pie, but again, I tend to leave the crust behind, which means I like a good coconut pudding.

Now ice cream vs. cake is another story -- I'm a bit harder pressed to decide there. And an ice cream pie (like one in an oreo crust) is better than ice cream cake (cake can get soggy or mushy)

Now, I've had bad cake and bad pie, and both are pretty lousy. Bad cake is probably the worst of the bunch -- pie tends not to be that astronomically bad, but I don't find it that astronomically good either.

But when you're a guest in my house, I'll make what you like. They're all fun to make.

Depends on the dessert. I am a chocoholic, and I prefer a rich chocolate cake over any other dessert. Chocolate pies? Never met one that I liked. Its like pudding with a crust. wth?

Pumpkin and blackberries are made for pie. Cherries I prefer topping cheesecakes or chocolate cake, or even in chocolate cake.

Peaches and apples I prefer as crisps with the crunchy oatmeal streusel topping to pies. And while I love the flavor the lemon merinque and key lime pie fillings, I can't stand the merinque. I'd much rather have a lemon or key lime cheesecake.

That said, I prefer pies as a savoury food to a sweet dessert - give me a chicken pot pie or a beef pie or a calzone any day.

I agree with the person that said "I'll take good cake over pie, but I'll take most any pie over the nasty store cake with transfat icing".

Maybe I've not had the ultimate pie yet but pie crust is ok, not thrilling. Anyone who has a suggestion for the ultimate pie in LA, please let me know.
