A fully moderated discussion on meat and milk from cloned animals is going down as part of the BBC News Have Your Say beta.

Would you be happy to eat cloned meat? Could cloning techniques be used to boost food production? Are you in the US, if so, will you be taking part in the public consultation?

The thread is titled Would you eat cloned meat? and brought about several choice responses.

Whatever happened to the free will of the market? Label the food and let consumers make their own minds. Either the price of real food will go up or nobody will bother to sell the cloned food.

It is similar to the bovine hormone introduced to expand milk production, when there was a surplus of milk already. Solving a problem that doesn't exist just to make a profit is shameful. I would be curious to see unbiased pros/cons of cloned food.

I don't understand the science behind cloning, but even so, I don't understand the strong reaction against cloned meat. I'd be curious about people's scientific concerns, because I'm wondering if the stong reaction might be : eee Yucky, religious, or political.

The ONLY thing I've read about cloned animals' health is that the cloned animals' lives are shorter, because their telomeres are the same length as what the donor animals' where when they collected whatever it is they collect.

Since we eat animals all the time with shorter life spans than ours, then I can only guess that consuming shorter telomeres does not pass onto us through our digestive systems, but I'm not an expert by any means.

I have not seen anything in the studies and trials on food either GM or cloned organisms that would make me leery of eating either.

If the cloned/GM foods labelled, I'd buy it at least once for the novelty; Afterwards, I'll choose it based on appearance, texture, and price - just as I do with any other fresh food.
