The Things One Learns on 'Teh Internets'

12/12/06 @ 10:35:45 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 583 views • Categories: Web Finds, Food Politics

I've read some fairly amazing stories about food whilst perusing the Internet. Some of them hairbrained and based in idle speculation, others well researched and well documented. Can you guess which category this article about soy from the conservative site WorldNetDaily falls into?

Here's a clue, in the form of a snippet from the post:

Soy is feminizing, and commonly leads to a decrease in the size of the penis, sexual confusion and homosexuality. That's why most of the medical (not socio-spiritual) blame for today's rise in homosexuality must fall upon the rise in soy formula and other soy products.

So let me see if I understand their premise -

Soy...

...causes homosexuality.

Ooooohhhhhhhh!! That explains everything!! I'm glad they could set the record straight.

I am notoriously conservative but this kind of argument, non sequitur as it may be, is almost offensively ridiculous. Free speech is alive, but at times, braindead.

Not commonly known, but the song "La Bamba" is a response to a sailor's query as to the best diet to ensure his continued masculinity. Thus the lyric, "Yo, no soy, marinero!"

Don't laugh, my dad thought that eating yogurt turned guys gay. He told me not to bring it into his house - and this was in the mid-'90s!

"I have nothing against an occasional soy snack. Soy is nutritious and contains lots of good things. Unfortunately, when you eat or drink a lot of soy stuff, you're also getting substantial quantities of estrogens."

Sure, it's that whole, "some of my best friends are soy snacks" logic that wingnuts use to couch their offensive position. And just how many estrogens are there, anyway? As many as there are internets?

I think soy products were used in the demolition of the World Trade Center by the Elders of Zion.

It's so unfortunate that people get sucked this kind of thinking based on a two-point correlation.

There *is* some evidence that "overdosing" on soy is NOT healthy for people with thyroid conditions, pre-menopausal women, and babies (http://web.archive.org/web/20000815204236/http://abcnews.go.com/onair/2020/2020_000609_soy_feature.html), but making people gay? Oy.

Well I ate some tofu last week, so I checked to see if things were any different.

From what I saw, I can't say I support his first claim...although I don't have any scientific basis for making that claim. It's just a hunch.

Perhaps we should be airlifting soy into overpopulated regions of the world as a way to reduce unwanted births! Oh my God this genius has just solved so many of the world's problems.

Excuse me now, I have to go hang my head in shame for mankind.

This an absurd, alarmist article.

While some of his claims may stem from truth, many are heavily flawed.

"Soy makes kids 'gay'" mentions decreased masculinity as a reason for male homosexuality, but doesn't explore/explain female homosexuality at all.

The worst part of all is that he doesn't offer any solutions and makes broad generalizations. I wrote to him, and my response is posted on my blog at http://vegan-vanguard.blogspot.com/2006/12/ugly-side-of-soyfoods.html#links

I must be in some kind of denial phase considering all the soy product I ingested. Oh well, not that I know I can certainly change my sexual habits...
