The FDA in Perspective

09/22/06 @ 09:00:00 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 841 views • Categories: FDA

I've been looking over a very interesting graph over at The Budget Graph. This graph gives a really handy visual representation of how large of a budget various government departments get in relation to one other.

I have a bit of homework for those who are interested. I want you to find the icon representing the FDA, the agency given oversight to the majority of our food supply. Then I want you to find the following answers:

Is the FDA budgeted more or less money than the following federal programs:

  • Military Spending for Israel
  • National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute
  • Emergency Spending for AIDS relief
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
  • The cost of one Virginia Class Submarine
  • Embassy Security, Construction and Maintenance
  • The Transportation Security Administration

Don't worry, I'll give the answers on Monday.

Wow, this graph is amazing and disappointing. I'm so glad you pointed it out.

Yes - it's quite pathetic. Even so, it's more than double the amount spent on "Clean Air and Global Climate Change".

*prod*  I found most of the answers and a few other disgusting comparisons (EPA? What EPA?), but you haven't given us your take on it. Make with the answers you promised or deal with a surly public that flings marriage offers like chimps fling... well... I'm not finishing that simile. Just make with the snarky.  :p

The FDA isn't doing so well on their drug safety program either, the NY Times reports (9/23/06):

The nation’s system for ensuring the safety of medicines needs major changes, advertising of new drugs should be restricted, and consumers should be wary of drugs that have only recently been approved, according to a long-anticipated study of drug safety.

The report by the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Sciences, is likely to intensify a debate about the safety of the nation’s drug supply and the adequacy of the government’s oversight.
[...]
The report’s conclusions are often damning. It describes the Food and Drug Administration as rife with internal squabbles and hobbled by underfinancing, poor management and outdated regulations.
