Latest FDA/Spinach Update

09/19/06 @ 06:30:00 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 636 views • Categories: E.Coli, Spinach

From their site:

FDA advises consumers not to eat fresh spinach or fresh spinach-containing products until further notice.

Meaning that this has moved beyond bagged spinach and bagged salads into all spinach except frozen and canned.

This is bad on so many levels.

1, I wonder if it's just badly worded (i.e., they forget to put the word "bagged" in front of spinach. Can we rely on them to be right? Rereading their statement, yeah, the word "bagged" was left out.

2. If it is ALL spinach, Holy Crap! And why isn't this then an All Points Bulletin, Major Warning!

3. Are they saying not to eat any spinach because they STILL HAVE NO CLUE as to what's going on? 114 reports of illness (more people get sick from from dining at their favorite fast food restaurant each day) is really microscopic quantity...

4. "If individuals believe they may have experienced symptoms of illness after consuming fresh spinach or fresh spinach-containing products, FDA recommends that they seek medical advice." Well, duh! Perhaps they'll be seeking legal advice, too?

5. Official Spinach Spokesman, Popeye, was quoted as saying, "I eats me spinach from a can, not a bag, har, har, har. Ya get what ya get, ya scurvy lot!"

Somewhere Popeye is crying.

Seriously though, why am I not surprised that shortly after this news broke, news that "terrorism not suspected" came out? Is that the de facto reaction nowadays?

As I noted on my site, what's next? Bathroom terrorism?

This is miserable. I eat a lot of spinach, I like it more than almost any other leafy green... I went out to dinner last night and forced myself to eschew several really tasty sounding spinach dishes. Dammit, dirty food producers, couldn't you have stuck to beef and lunchmeat, which I can live without, rather than taking my tasty, tasty vegetables?

Also, my laundry pile is high. I suspect terrorists weren't involved, but I can't be sure. If they're after my spinach... anything is fair game.
