The Lobster Misdirection

06/21/06, by Kate Hopkins Email 1433 views • Categories: Food News, Shopping, Food Politics

By now I am sure that many of you have heard that Whole Foods is no longer going to see live lobsters. Their stated reason is that it's unethical to keep them out of their environment for an extended length of time.

And yet...something doesn't sound right about this. To me, this is a decision based off of the worst of information, information that comes from us anthropomorphizing an animal.

Recent information from Norwegian research has shown that Lobsters do not feel pain. Bob Bayer, who heads the Lobster Institute and is a University of Maine professor, has said that "They have no brain, he said. Therefore, they do not feel pain. It’s a judgment based on the anatomy of the nervous system. No brain (means) a lack of processing system".

As this Norwegian report has been around since a least Feburary of 2005, Whole Foods has most likely been aware of it. So what other motivation could they possibly have in discontinuing lobster sales?

Well, possibly profit margins for one. The sale and upkeep of the lobster tank would eat into the cost of what is arguably a low turnover item. Plus the tanks take up valuable real estate in a grocery store, space that can be used to sell items with larger margins and turn over in sales quicker. The one thing grocery stores are accutely aware of is how much money a foot of space can bring into the store on a daily, quarterly and yearly basis.

Considering the fact that lobsters are still going to be sold in Whole Foods, most likely flash frozen along with hundreds of other packed together brethern. And considering that it will be most likely fish that takes over the space left empty by the departed tanks, fish that are killed by suffocation and in some instances gutted and bled whilst still alive, it's hard for me to swallow this "ethical treatment of lobsters" argument.

Yes, but Norway also is strongly pro-whaling. I wouldn't necessarily take advice from them. Whole Foods is probably reacting to complaints from customers and employees.

Interesting post. We don't have Whole Foods here, but I imagine that as you stated, their decision was probably more profit motivated rather than ethics.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that Wholefoods can get away with charging more for pre-cooked and/or flash-frozen lobsters than they can for live ones.

The store here in Toronto carries pre-cooked lobsters for about $2 - $3 more per pound than comparable places do for live lobster.

As I pointed out to the guy at the Wholefoods fish counter - why would I pay someone $10 - $12 to do something that I could do at home for free? Especially when cooking them myself guarantees the freshness.

I couldn't agree more with your reasoning. They quietly stopped scaling fish too, and if there was any way they could pass it as an ethical issue, they would. Whole Foods might have started as an organic store that cared about food and environment, but these days, they are a big corporation that tries to present an overly organic and gourmet facad. It's stawberry season in New England now and guess where our strawberries at WF are from... California. So much for supporting small organic farmers.

These creatures I am sure sense that they are being crushed at the bottom of the tank. They cannot move. They cannot eat anything. They are in the wrong water temperature for them. Do you think any animal in this earth doesn't feel when it is hungry? Whole Foods is shining a bright light onto how we do not care for the animals being sent to slaughter for our consumption. Look into it. Find out how why the eggs are only .99--The poor chickens are just machines for us. They are packed together so tight, there beaks are cut off so they cannot peck each other--this doesn't matter because they lay more eggs when they don't eat. The lights are on 22 hours a day so they lay more eggs. The organic eggs are close to $4.00. It is worth it. Lets put an end to cruelty by AWARENESS.
