For Sale - One Food Blog Network

06/12/06 @ 05:30:00 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 478 views • Categories: Announcements

This is one of those posts that I don't really want to write, but I have to.

We (that is, Megan, Tara and myself) are putting the Well Fed Blog Network up for sale.

The reason we are doing so is due to the realization that, although Well Fed has been providing quality content for half a year now, we (the current owners) do not have the personal or financial resources to get it to the point of profitability.

We can set up the hardware and software. We can get the writers and editors on board. We can even get an increasing readership. The difficulty lay in the ability to get regular advertising, which in turn could provide the income with which we could pay the editors and writers.

We will entertain any offer, and have set a deadline of July 15th as the last date we'll accept offers.

Before panicking, I'd recommend swapping out all your ads for AdSense or another contextual ad system and see how much you can make. The net effective CPM you'd get from AdSense is probably better than you could get from other ads.

Six months is nothing -- it takes that long for Google to notice you. Most of your traffic will come into your archives from searches, not from regular readers to your top page. You need to cut unnecessary costs (like the ad sales person that Tara mentioned in an earlier post), dig in for the long run, and build up a backlist of content. Each PageRank uptick will help to snowball your traffic, because Google crawls deeper in addition to raising you up in the search results.

Sorry to hear that you're thinking about selling. I'd agree with the first comment that it might be worth using AdWords or similar. Or you could go for an AdWords / BlogAds combo like Amateur Gourmet.

I suppose it raises the question of how much money you thought you might make from the Network. As far as I can tell, those bloggers who have been financially successful, have done well from their non-blog activities. At most, the blogs have served as a way to communicate with the outside, rather than becoming commercial successes in their own right.
