Consumer group sues FDA over biotech foods

06/08/06, by Kate Hopkins Email 630 views • Categories: Food Politics

Hey, if that what it takes for the FDA to take notice, count me amongst those in support of the lawsuit. From the article:

enetically modified crops, such as soybeans, corn, and canola, are grown widely throughout the United States, and the world leader in development and marketing of the gene-altered crops is St. Louis, Missouri-based Monsanto Co

Yet the United States requires no independent testing of these crops or the food products they are used in, does not mandate what data companies must submit for review, and does not require that foods that contain biotech crops be labeled...

Which begs the question "Where's the check and balances in regard these commodities?"

Being the every lovin' hazel-eyed pragmatist that I am, I don't think that Genetically modified food is the devil incarnate. Clearly products can be developed that have little or no harm upon people or the environments.

However (and there always seems to be a "however"), the risk surrounding these products is higher than most of the Agri-businesses would like us to believe. Not only do these products run the potential of introducing health problems into consumers (most likely in the form of allergies), but then there's the added risk of environmental concerns that are more likely to be introduced by some of the genetically modified products. You can read up on the issues surrounding the Terminator Gene for more proof of that.

So when we're dealing with technologies that can destroy the planet, call me crazy, but I think a little regulation and oversight is a good thing.

Ok, oversite I can agree with, I guess, as long as I get an answer to "who is gonna pay for it?" - I just remember that most of these designs are to help agriculture in areas that have trouble growing crops in the first place (e.g., poor countries).
But labelling? Not unless you put a label on every domesticated crop known to man as ALL of them are genetically modified as well.

Did you look at 100777.com's other content at all before linking to them? They're obviously a bunch of cranks. Compare with timecube.com. Their particular obsession seems to be the "New World Order" and how to defeat it. They have a plan though, so I think we're safe.

You'll have to find a trustworthy source that doesn't belong in a mental institution before I'll take your GMO FUD seriously.

The GMO issue is extremely complicated, and it's difficult to find decent information about it because every source online is just terribly biased.

I wrote a paper about GMOs recently for a class, and the main problem with them that I found through my research is that there is a real lack of research being done. So here's some information from some random person on the internet:

One study I read said that there have been only ten published studies on GMOs, and six of them were done by companies (Monsanto? I can't remember), and the other studies found that there were "potentially negative changes which have not been explained."

The other problem is what genes are being spliced into what. I think they were putting a brazil nut gene into soy, but that isn't being done anymore. Now the concern is over whether or not combining genes will create a new allergen.

Sorry, this is getting a bit verbose.

Package labeling is the first thing that needs to happen. Without knowing that we are eating GMO products, there's no way to track trends in allergies and other health complications.

I recently saw a documentary about Monsanto (who is the devil incarnate) that discussed the packaging issue. Monsanto and like companies have lobbied against labeling - probably because if something does go wrong they would be held liable. Without labeling though, how do we make the linkage?
