FDA Benzene Report out...kind of

05/24/06 @ 05:32:25 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 1750 views • Categories: FDA, Soda, Benzene

The FDA has been very hush hush about their soda/Benzene testing. First they assured us that there was no problem, and then a little later they said that "Well, there's sort of a problem, but kinda not really. We'll wait until the test results are complete before we make any conclusions."

The report is now out and the FDA concludes...

Because of the limited survey data to date, we cannot yet understand the sources of variation in measured benzene levels, such as variability between different product lots and the effects of storage and handling.

Translated into english, they're saying "We don't know what the heck is going on. There's too much data to look at to give a full conclusion, and don't you worry your pretty little heads that this is an issue you need to worry about, or that there would be major ramifications to the Soda Industry if we actually committed to a conclusion of any sort"

Okay, so I embellished the last bit there.

It appears as if there's still more testing to do, and the FDA has not commited to any future updates on this issue of yet.

Meanwhile, it's probably a good idea to get rid of your stockpiles of Safeway Select Diet Orange, AquaCal Strawberry Flavored Water Beverage, Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange or Giant Light Cranberry Juice Cocktail, all of which were shown to have an excess of benzene after the completion of some of the tests, anywhere between 23 to 79 parts per billion (remember, anything over 5 parts per billion should make you sit up and take notice).

I have a hunch its more than those specific sodas we need to watch out for.

The May 2006 issue of the Ecologist suggests that any soda that contains both sodium benzoate and ascorbic acid will combine to produce benzene.

Blech :P

ps- forgot to add, the Ecologist implied that the FDA has known about this production of benzene in sodas for 15 years...

What I noticed in those test results is that all the ones with high levels of benzene are *diet* drinks. We were told earlier that it's the combination of benzoate and ascorbic acid, yet there were drinks with that combo that did not yield high results. So perhaps it's the addition of a third ingredient, found in diet drinks, that yields the benzene in measurable quantities? Notice that Crystal Light reformulated one of their offending drinks. What did they change? That might provide a clue!

I work at a nonprofit that's been looking at this issue (and providing the primary push against FDA) and we've found that the sugar in sodas actually slows down the benzoate preservative and ascorbic acid reaction. So diet sodas, which lack sugar, are actually prone to higher levels of benzene.

If you're looking for more information, our latest release on benzene is found here, along with links to our other work on it. We've also still got a petition aimed at the FDA for better testing and regulation.

Political Lynching of Arab Americans "Arabs Needs Not Apply"

purging pop from the schools: wake-up call for the states:

Last May 2005, I ran for the Eugene, Oregon School Board , against the executive of Pepsi cola Eric Forrest. I was followed, stalked, telephone harassment, hate emails, more than 5 a day on my blog, and ran over several times on my way home. I was almost going to be killed. Just because of the corruption of Corporate Power and some of our elected officials!

The previous superintendent David Piercy and his wife Mayor Kitty Piercy, had played a bigger role in destroying me. KEZI our local TV station paraded me with the help of Chamber of Commerce.

They picked up a Jewish woman Aria Seligmann to run against me, to spilt the progressive community. So, all the Zionists came after me.

I had to file a stalking order to stop Aria and her campaign manager "Green Party chair" William Maxwell.
My two legislators' Sen. Vicki Walker -defended Pepsi executive: By blaming the obesity of the children on their family. Vicki said the "the children come to school obese. It is not the soda in the school to be blamed"- Rep. Bob Ackerman who had forged my family's signature and defrauded us, sold my family's condo, that worth $150, 000.00 by giving us only $41,000.00!-
Then Mr. Ackerman listed the condo by a higher price than he actually sold it!

My commissioner Bobby Green, my councilman Gray Pape, and three other Councilors endorsed Eric Forrest. And the so called, progressive Commissioner Pete Sorenson "The REAL Democrat" & Councilors Bonny Bettman, Andréa Ortiz and "Mayor for all Eugene", -but not the Arabs or Muslims- Kittie Piercy endorsed the other candidate who was not even democrat or qualified! And of course the previous Mayor Jim Torrey, who's running now for legislature seat,. Jim Torrey headed the kids Sport to hide his agenda of supporting junk food in the schools !

All the elected members of the Eugene school Board endorsed and appointed Eric Forrest to the Board.

The 4J Superintendent George Russell, with our Superintendent Susan Castillo too were very much supportive of Eric Forrest and Soda in the Schools.

Even Stand for the Children & all the Oregon School Association OSSA & Eugene, EESA , did not endorse me.They ended up endorsing & giving Erik Forrest the money..

My life was in peril & still is, just, because of $320.000.00 contribution from the soda executives. This contribution was not even invested in a good healthy food!

Read about it in our RG paper Tuesday April 11-06:

We must put stop to this kind of abuse and corruption. We need to hold our elected official accountable for their misconduct and greed.

PS: 25 applicants were interviewed for this position on Jan. 2005. When were asked if we're going to file on May 2005 election. All of us said YES. However, none had filed for this position but "ME". All the rest of the applicants were informed & warned NOT to file against the Pepsi executive Eric Forrest! I was set to be killed!!

FDA set to recall bottled water in bromate scare

By Chris Mercer

24/08/2006 - America's food safety watchdog is expected to announce the recall of several bottled water brands, thought to contain cancer-causing bromate above the legal limit in the US, BeverageDaily.com has learned.
The recall is expected to involve a range of private label bottled waters taken from the Springbrook Springs source in Concord, New York, including water sold by the TopCo retailer under its Food Club brand.

Long-term exposure to bromate may increase consumers' risk of cancer, according to the US government's Environmental Protection Agency.

The news comes only a couple of weeks after upmarket US retailer Wegmans recalled its Food You Feel Good About Spring Water because of bromate.
