Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream

I received an e-mail recently, asking me if I wanted to sample some gourmet ice cream from the Snoqualmie Gourmet Ice Cream company. They agreed to my terms, but after we got to talking, I found myself invited to go out to the ice cream facility and was given a tour. These are things that typical consumers don't get to see first hand.

While at their facility (which I'll talk about in a later post), I was given several pints of their product, including their Danish Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. It's this flavor that I wanted to talk about. As I had Breyer's Vanilla recently, I thought comparing the two would be a great way to see which brand was better.

I like Breyer's Vanilla. It's important I state that for the record. If I have limited ice cream choices at the supermarket, it's the brand I reach for. So comparing Snoqualmie's vanilla version against this work horse of a brand would possibly be very enlightening.

Look: With flecks of brown vanilla within the white granulated ice cream, Breyer's looks almost as it does on the cover of the box. The Snoqualmie has no such flecks, but looks more dense than Breyers.

Nose: Yes, smelling ice cream is as weird as it sounds. Aside from the chill of the ice cream, each brand brought forth a bit of a vanilla aroma. No huge difference between the two.

Taste: Here is where Snoqualmie beats Breyer's. First the texture: Breyer's was good, but a little grainy when compared against Snoqualmie. Snoqualmie's ice cream was very velvety and had a better mouthfeel.
Taste-wise, it comes down to the length of the flavor in the mouth. While Breyer's was fairly nice and vanilla, it as pretty straightforward and simple. The flavor faded as quick as the ice cream melter.

Snoqualmie's vanilla taste was sharp and complex and lasted quite longer than Breyers.

Overall: Snoqualmie is the better tasting ice cream. Period. It's more flavorful, creamier and softer on the palate than what Breyer's offers. If you're ever in the Seattle/Portland corridor, look up this brand (it's not available beyond here...yet).

You should try Blue Bell Ice Cream. I think the plant is located in Texas.

It's seriously good stuff.

You know what is THE BEST ice cream (vanilla or otherwise)? Austrailian Homemade (www.australianhomemade.com). It takes like it just came out of the home crank! I didn't even really like ice cream that much (and I would certainly never eat it in the winter) until I discovered a please that sells it around the corner from my house...and then it was all over. =)

I just recently saw the Honey Lavender Ice Cream in a Market on Queen Anne in Seattle, WA. My girlfriends and I tried it, and I must say that it was the most unusual but fantastic flavor of ice cream that I have evry come into contact with. We couldn't stop savoring the flavor for it lasts and the flavors develop beautifully as the seconds pass. Two spoons up for a fabulous concoction of flavor!

I stumbled upon one of your ice cream flavors (FRENCH LAVENDER)and fell in love with it. Recently I went into one of the Haggen's stores and was unable to find it. I even went to another Haggen's store at another location and still was unable to find it. Have you stopped making it? I settled for the Green Tea flavor but was not satisfied.

I picked up the Green Tea favor at the local QFC this afternoon since it's on special. From my knowledge, I don't usually get Green Tea ice cream favor, but I want something new. Boy, it's delicious in terms of price and 'made in WA'.

However,snoqicecream.com went MIA.

I hardly go for Breyer's.

Snoqualmie's Danish Vanilla Bean is creamier than Breyers. Far Far's Danish Sweet Cream was more creamy but no longer available due to a fire. But the most creamy Danish Sweet Cream Ice Cream is made by Zingers Homade Ice Cream in Seaside, Oregon. Check out their website. It talks about butterfat content and stuff like that.

I dunno about the artificial, J bee (B for Breyer.... hmmmm.... but it works for me!

I saw that they have this at QFC (which is dangerously close), and had a hard time deciding between the Green Tea and I think Coconut? I think the Ginger is amazing though, the very dense cream with sharp little bits of ginger.

But the Creme Fraiche is my very favorite. Very unusual, and probably not everyone's taste.
