Voting Begins for the 2005 Food Blog Awards!

01/05/06 @ 05:30:00 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 801 views • Categories: Nominations

In the immortal words of U2, "Hello Hello! Ola!". Welcome to the voting round of the 2005 Food Blog Awards. The judges have finished with their voting and judging, and after these are the final nominees that we were able to shake from the tree.

Let me tell you, this was more difficult than anticipated, for two reasons:

  1. There were as many as 4 times the amount of nominees over last year.
  2. The quality of Food blogs has improved across the board.

This, mixed in with the holiday season, has left me with a bit of egg on my face, as we had to delay the announcement of nominees by two weeks. For that, I apologize.

Let me quickly explain how the final list was determined. Soon after the nominations were complete, I sent an Excel Spreadsheet to all the judges, with a list of all the nominees for each category. I asked the judges to determine their choice for the top 5 sites in each category, and then send the list back to me.

From there, I compiled their choices into one large list, per category. Due to similar tastes in some categories, and vast differences in others, the lists were as small as 12 sites in one category, to over 20 sites in another. I then returned the lists to them, and had them rank them from most favorite to least favorite. I then averaged out the results, and the five lowest scores in each category made it the the voting round.

This is where you, the reader come in. The Polls will remain open until 12 midnight PST on January 18th. We will then review the database to check for any ballot stuffing, and then announce the winners at some point during the following week. My hope is to announce the winners on January 23rd, but I'm a tad skittish at setting dates at the moment, due to my earlier faux pas.

We will be announcing the winners of the polls on WellFed.net, in order to promote the Well Fed site, as well as to move these awards to a more professional arena.

Thank you so much for your patience, and for your readership. I'm quite sure that the owners and writers of the blogs listed here would say the same thing.

Without Further delay, the voting begins....NOW!

That's a great poll. I'm going to have to waste half the day surfing just to see the entrants. :-)

Hi Kate, thanks so much for orchestrating this wonderful event!! I do have a suggestion - since after voting in a particular category you can no longer see the list of finalists, maybe you could post a list of them all somewhere else?

I agree that the sites that were nominated for best photography have excellent photographs. However, it is one thing to photograph food well in the comfort of one's own kitchen, where things like lighting and presentation are easily controlled. It is another thing to photograph food in a restaurant, where the photographer has no control over a dish's presentatio and must contend with low lighting and the need to be inconspicuous. Next year, you may want to consider separating best photography into two categories: best photography-restaurant reviews, and best photography-recipes.

Owen here (one of the judges) - just wanted to say that this was VERY hard - often there was little to seperate the top ten or twelve nominations in a category. I also have to say that the quality is growing by leaps and bounds. As well as the diversity. I had the hardest time with best writing and best post categories. I strongly suggest people dig back through Kate's archive and read through the nominations in comments especially in the best post category and then go read those posts. It will NOT be wasted time!

Thank you Kate for hosting these awards. I don't know how you do all this in addition to your regular wonderful and informative blogging. Thanks to the judges who spent time during holidays going through all the nominations.

Congrats to all nominees.

Thank you so much, everyone. I'm so honored to be in this list of food sites, the people who inspire me every day. And I'm really thrilled for all my readers who don't normally read food blogs, the people coming to my web page looking for answers as to what they can eat, and then end up becoming as addicted to other food blogs as I am!

Thank you again.

Thank you, judges and Kate, for the huge pile of work this event has to be--and as Owen said--hard work. I've read a lot of the posts nominated for best post and he is right--there is a lot of great writing out there.

I am very honored to be a finalist. It means a great deal to be included with the other finalists whose posts inspire me to no end.

Thank you all.

An enormous thank you to Kate, Tara, and all of the judges! These awards are a huge undertaking, I know, but they make an absolutely invaluable compilation for all of us who read and love food blogs. Please know that your work is greatly appreciated.

And of course, a hearty congratulations to all the nominees!

I like a lot of your choices. There are lots of problems too. Mollys Madeline for best recipes? Looking at her well writen blog, maybe youll notice she hasnt posted a recipe since October. Why not include bakingsheet or fresh approach? You should have been more clear on the requirements.
