Tasting Notes: Pomelo

10/27/05 @ 05:45:00 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 1421 views • Categories: Tasting Notes

PomeloEvery once in a while, the neighborhood grocery store will stock a unique fruit or veggie in their produce section. Yesterday, that fruit was a pomelo. Never having seen a pomelo before, I jmped at the chance to see just what I've been missing.

A Pomelo is a citrus fruit. It is the parent of the grapefruit. In fact the grapefruit is simply a hybrid between a pomelo and an orange. As you can see from the picture, I didn't pick up the ripest of the fruits, but only because I had no idea on what I was getting myself into.

Eyes: About the size of a large grapefruit, the skin was a lime green. In looking at wikipedia, I find that this is not typical, as a ripe pomelo is usually a pale green to yellow when ripe. The rind and flesh are both very firm, both indicating that the fruit is not fully mature.

Nose: Smells like a grapefruit. This is hardly a revelation.

Taste: The fruit is quite good, even if not fully ripe. It's not tart at all, as one might expect a grapefruit to be. It's not overly sweet either. In fact, it's a very subdued sweet, which makes it quite tasty.

Overall: Hey, it's a new fruit to track down on a regular basis. As Pomelo's are now grown in California, I'm looking to see this more often in my grocery store. I would most assuredly purchase again.

I've never tried them but I've seen them on display a few times. Thanks for the tasting notes! I'll be sure to purchase one the next time I see one.

I like them(!) and buy them each year at the Marin (20 mins North of SF) Farmer's Market. My local Whole Foods (Santa Rosa) was the first place I spotted them this year - about two weeks ago.

I've had no luck figuring out which ones are ripe/best before buying/eating.

There are different varieties on the market, too (I think I've seen four kinds so far), so that explains why you found color differences. Here's another link on them:

I have many childhood memories of pomelos. To this day, I keep expecting grapefruit to taste like pomelos. Ripe they're lighter, not as sharply sour as grapefruit.

Pomelos in France are yellow-pink on the ouside. Yours green, but still look the same on the inside.

Very nice tasting notes. I'm similarly excited that pomellos are becoming more available. They pair fantastically with fresh crab for a delicious winter salad.

Go for the heaviest fruit for the size. I don't know what makes them so different from other citrus fruits in this regard, but they have an amazingly pungent, fresh and spicy smell that can perfume an entire room when left out. Great for a fruit bowl!

I am completely addicted to this fruit. I purchase them from my local grocer for a pretty penny, but I absolutly love them so I find it worth it. I look for rines that are slightly soft and the bigger the better. I really never know what I will be getting into, will it be ripe or not. All the same I enjoy each one. My dear Hubby calls me the pomelo queen, but all the "C" has help ward off colds this season.
