What's Missing from this Picture?

09/19/05 @ 06:00:49 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 2490 views • Categories: Food

Mission GuacomoleIn my never ending quest to call BS on the products that mega-corporations tend to foist upon the consumer market, I bring you the latest discovery found in my local supermarket.

In this picture is a jar of Mission brand Guacamole Dip (with garden vegetables). Here is their ingredient list:

Water, Canola Oil, Modified Food Starch, Tomato Paste, Maltodextrin, Contains 2% or less of: Avocado Powder, Dehydrated Onion, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Garlic Powder, Bell Pepper, Spices, Whey Protein Concentrate, Salt, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Worchestershire Sauce Powder (Corn Syrup Solids, Salt, Caramel Color, Garlic, Sugar, Spices, Soy Sauce Solids [Naturally Fermented Wheat and Soybeans, Salt, Maltodextrin, Caramel Color], Tamarind, Natural Flavors), Citric Acid, Chili Pepper, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Lime Juice Solids, Sugar, Glucono- Delta-Lactone, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, DATEM, Lactic Acid, Monosodium Glutamate, Yellow #5 & Blue #1.

Notice anything missing?

Say...avocados? Oh sure, approximately 2% of the product is Avocado powder, but avocado powder is no more an avocado than corn flour is a corn.

I will be gracious enough to say that tomato paste, bell peppers, and garlic does constitute some measure of what one could call "garden vegetables". But guacamole without avocados? This is a first.

I should also note that this product cost me 3 bucks. For easily half that cost I could pick up an avocado, a tomato, and a lemon, and create a nice basic guacamole that would taste far better than this little jar of non-avocado havin' pseudo guacamole.

That list contains almost everything I abstain from...Avocados? Who needs 'em? You got "natural" as well as "artificial flavors" and MSG!...And DATEM, God knows what that is.

That is pretty junky stuff.

I don't think I would have paid anything for that even to blog about it. Ick.

Besides--there is no such thing as commercially available guacamole that doesn't taste like--well, I will refrain from obscene language. Suffice to say that commercially made, packaged guac tastes awful.

Wow. That's gross.

On the other hand, anyone who would eat "guacamole" that wasn't prepared fresh minutes before consumption has it coming to them.

Even if it contained real avocados, think of all the preservatives that they'd have to put in it to keep it from oxidizing before they even got the lid on the jars.

Doritos Guacamole! Flavored Tortilla Chips are pretending to contain avocados as well. I don't think they even have avocado powder in them.

Well, it's moot because I can't eat them anymore due to the corn, but I just had to share. :)

Now, now, it's not all that bad -- finding locally made artisan Worchestershire Sauce Powder to make a proper guac is really hard! ;)

That's disgusting. And exactly what I'm writing about these days. How we eat is a political act. How can we have sold our souls and tastebuds to convenience like this?

ACK!

Thanks for pointing this out.

(laughing) Guac without avocados! What will they think of next!? And it's not labeled low-fat?! (And I see it has a touch of transfat, too! And, perhaps the ultimate bonus, MSG!)

You BOUGHT this? I would take it back and tell them after tasting it it didn't seem very avocado-y, and then you checked the ingredients and well, there wasn't really any.

Returning products like this (depending where bought from) can be very productive.

That stuff has always disturbed me.. particularly the fact that it is a distinctly different colour to homemade guacamole!

And while we're on the guacamole tip, why the hell do people make guac with cream!?

And as an added bonus, it has "Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil" so it will stay in your body forever! Yay!

What's with David ripping on the MSG! Its the most 'natural' ingredient in the Guacamole, its made from fermented Cassava root:

Like beer, or bread, you could even call it health food, well, the makers of Mission could call it health food.

If you're willing to take the time and blog about it, I would also recommend taking the time and complain to someone who has the authority and responsibility to do something about it.

http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html

The FDA probably won't do anything about it, but it definately won't if no one complains... unless they read boingboing like they should. :)

Kate, I was working on my wrap-up for the Eat Local Challenge and I admit I got pretty blunt about the people who eat this kind of crap regularly--and of course I am equally hot about the people who manufacture it.

I linked to your post, and agree that you should try to return the stuff. Say it tastes horrible and unnatural.

Next time, just use the macro mode on your digital camera and take a shot of the label. They don't deserve your money!

That ingredient, DATEM, sounds too complex to be healthy, kind of worries me that an ingredient (see link at here )needs to be qualified at such length for use. What happened to using real ingredients in food??

I don't know why people get so upset about this kind of thing.

The ingredients are on the damn label, if someone is too lazy to read it when they buy it, then that is the consumer's problem. They are not hiding anything, and they are not stopping you from going to the fresh produce section.

Some people really don't care what is in their food, and for those people corporate goop suits just fine.

Plus people get so uppity about natural vs. synthetic. It makes little difference.

Poison from a venomous spider/snake is "natural" but I would rather have something like maltodextrin or MSG in my food instead.

Whoopsies. I inadvertently used characters that appeared as unclosed tags, omitting the rest of my comment.

FERROUSWHEEL WROTE:
"Plus people get so uppity about natural vs. synthetic. It makes little difference."

. . . . . . . . . . .

What an ill-informed thing to say. There is a HUGE difference between natural versus synthetic. (Anyone jump on this pigpile with me?) But that you believe there is not, and that you believe that people committed to restoring integrity in the food people is are "uppity" is exactly the problem we are facing in this world.

You've become assimilated.

If you can't taste the difference between REAL flavors and flavors created with chemicals, then you might be hopeless. And you might be poisoning yourself into oblivion. Have a nice trip.

Tana,

I absolutely agree with you. The comments were so absurd, I thought them to be a troll. So I ignored. The ignorance contained within is fairly difficult to miss.

DH bought some packaged quac home once, but I don't think it was this kind because it was in a sealed-plastic bag thingee with a cardboard wrapper.

Anyway it had a finger from plastic gloves in it! I found it after pulling it out from my mouth! After spitting everything in my mouth out, I didn't see anything else gross.

But what was so weird is that the finger part had a clean cut. I got a little light headed when I started thinking about how this could have happened. But DH looked through the rest of the gunk and didn't see anything that looked like someone's finger.

I wrote to the manufacturers (someplace in Texas, not Houston because I would have remembered if they were from where I live). They wrote back and apologized, and didn't even refund me for the one ruined package.

I haven't totally got him to quit buying prefab food yet, but that helped. He still prefers the boxed macaroni and cheese to homemade. He says it's the texture difference...gaaa! I'm sure it's because he was raised on the boxed stuff...double-gaa!

Some folks are not concerned about "artificial" vs. "natural" ingredients, Ferrous, but just because some people are concerned doesn't make them uppity.

It makes them informed.

You don't like it--don't read labels and don't read commentary from informed people.

But the fact remains that Mission is selling something called quacamole which does not contain avocado. That is BS, right there, pure and simple. Sure, people should read ingredient labels--but notice how large the printing is declaring the food guacamole, then compare it to the size of the print for the ingredients.

And think about that.

They are not completely being deceptive, but neither is the company being honest.

I'm sorry I stirred things up. I agree they shouldn't be labelling this guacamole - when it is clearly is being used very very loosely here.

Still my point about natural vs. synthetic remains. I'll admit that there are some purely human made substances which are not good for us. But if you synthesize a chemically identical product to a natural one there is no difference between them except one of aethestics.

I agree with the other commenters who said it's the fault of consumers who buy this stuff. Just what would make *anyone* think that a KRAFT product would have real ingredients in it?

I mean really... are you serious?

Whoever eats store-bought guacamole, whether the Whole Foods brand or Kraft, deserves what they get anyway. How hard is it to buy some avocados and mash them up, FFS?
