1st annual independent food festival and awards: Best Flavored water not flavored with fruit

02/22/05 @ 06:59:16 am, by Kate Hopkins Email 679 views • Categories: Food

I love my beverages, of this there is no doubt. I enjoy tea, beer, soda pop, you name it. Water, however, is one beverage in which I am particularly particular. Give me a bottle of Pellegrino and I'm satisfied.

Flavored waters? Feh. They're typically Kool-aid disguised as fad. I dismissed them outright as a blip on the consumer water market.

At least, that used to be my thinking until I came across a bottle of metromint peppermint water. Without sounding too much like a commercial, this was the first flavored water that I come back to on a regular basis. It's water and peppermint. Period. No artificial flavoring, no added calories. It's the perfect drink right after dinner.

So, in honor of Taste Everything's independant food festival and awards, I award Metromint the Best Flavored water not flavored with fruit award. For making and selling a bottle of water that provides the marketplace something new.

I can't believe you call it "soda" and not "pop" :)

You've forgotten your roots!

We've been looking for different things to replace Coke et al on the menu and have been tasting a variety of things. Among the samples was the metromint. I have to say I didn't care for it. But then again I don't particularly like flavored waters period.

Last night I experimented with a gignger syrup run through our carbonation system without much success.

Having the water with a meal is probably a bad idea. However, I find myself purchasing this water simply to drink it by itself. I really do enjoy it when drinking it at the time of the meal that those in the past would call the drink a digestive.

I'm really interested in what alternatives you do find for soda. I found myself thinkign about beverage choices at restaurants and getting more and more frustrated. I used to drink Iced tea, but even that has been ruined for me by too many folks not knowing how to brew a perfect pot (or by using that Lipton crap, and letting it sit in the metal server for hours at a time. What other options are you looking at aside from the ginger syrup?

I kept thinking as I read your post about the the surge of product placements in blogs recently. I'm not saying that's why you wrote about this particular brand of water, but I find myself reading some blogs with less trust for recommendations.

Didn't have the water with a meal, just by itself. It was a bit too strong for me.

The options are tricky because while neither our GM or I drink we also are not soda drinkers. I've consumed more soda type beverages in the last month or so of exploring than I have in the last 10 years. We typically like something not quite so sweet and most places don't have satisfying options.

I'll have to do a post about this on my own blog so stop by tomorrow.

This sounds great, Kate! I only wish us poor little Canadians could get things like this up here in the "Great White North". We have a fruit flavoured "health water" that is actually quite good, but I would LOVE a mint-flavoured water...I usually make peppermint tea at some point during the week and keep a big container of it in the fridge for drinking after dinner...it has always been a great digestive "tonic".

Just back back from the store but I'm temped to run out and find some... or make my own.

Just went on a water kick but I'm not a huge fan. I found that the le criox flavored waters are the best to me. Good with Vodka too!
