WBW: Wacky Wine Names: 2003 Wolf Trap

Ugh.

Ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh.

That's all I can say in regard to the wine I chose for this round of Wine Blogging Wednesday. I walked into Larry's, up to the person in charge of wine, and asked "Which wine name makes you giggle?"

Her response?

A bottle of 2003 Wolftrap.

I can hear you now...."Huh? WolfTrap? How is that name wacky?"

Well, you see. Wolftrap is a South African wine. And it's name comes from the fact that when the Dutch moved into the area back during their colonial phase, they brought a fair amount of wolf traps in order to protect themselves. There was only one problem with this:

There are no wolves in South Africa.

So you have a wine so named because it pokes fun at the Dutch. Ha Ha.. ha...ha...

Ha...

*sigh*

Okay, it's kinda lame. To add inury to (Dutch) insults, the wine is fairly horrible. I should have noticed that right off the bat when no varietal is mention on the wine label. Although I was able to find out that the 2003 WolfTrap is a detailed blend of 7.1% Syrah, 11.78% Ruby Cabernet, 12.4% Pinotage, 45.33% Cinsault, 9.39% Grenache and 13.99% Cabernet Sauvignon. Which equals 100% liquid bile. Those who claim that this wine 'is powerfully aromatic with soft, jammy, lush, and spicy redcurrant aromas and an edge of smoky bacon' obviously got a batch that I did not. The after taste of this wine was as bitter as Condoleezza Rice's attitude towards Senator Barbara Boxer. It tastes both watered down, and the tannins are overwhelming.

Foods to eat with this wine? Twinkies...three day old pizza...road kill.

What a horrible wine.

Ugh.

Blech. Sounds like you had the same experience I did.

I kinda really wanted to like mine... but c'est la vie! At least we didn't have to finish the bottle!

Well, maybe i got a different batch of this stuff, but I thought it was amazing. I will say, my first taste was suprizing, so after letting it breathe for a little bit, i went back to it. I aroma was full and thick, it's taste, rich and warm. I like the spice, the hint of chocolate mixed with oak, and it's spicy finish. Sorry you all didn't like it, that just means more for me!!! :)

This wine is usedin several excellent (almost michelin starred) restaurants in Belgium as "wine of the house". Are you sure your tastes have developed enough to appreciate this wine?

You definitely have to let it breathe, as with Rhone, Bordeaux and Languedoc wines. It's fairly powerful and still quite tightly wound. I'd agree it has an edge of bitterness. Otherwise i quite liked it, but like virtually all South African wine, it has that smoky smell and taste plus of course the alcohol. You either love or hate it. Better luck next time with a Stellenbosch or a Paarl :)

Errrrr. This stuff is seriously good value - huge in taste yeah, but that is the style. In fact for the price it has to be one of the best wines I've ever tasted!! Absolutely in a different league to the KWV you wasted your time with. And there''s a lot of back up for that in the literature... It's basically world famous for being fantastically intense and complex. The guy who makes it is Mark Kent who's top wines are generally regarded as the very best in S.Africa.

This wine is great and I am am sure it will even age very well! If you can get hold of some buy it, decant it for 6-12 hours and see what happens! Increadibly good value and very far away from that sweetish/vanilla/oak/fruitbombstuff you so often get from Australia/SA/Calif./...

I'm going to have to add my point to the "This wine was amazing." side. I had a glass last night at a restaurant in Hermosa Beach, CA and it knocked my socks off. Deliciously complex, jammy, smooth with subtle spice....all around yummy. I will now go to my local K&L Wine Merchants and buy a bottle, so I can try it again. Hopefully, the next glass is as good as the first.
